Chapter 10
In the empty bakery Rachael closed her eyes and started to count down from one hundred in her head. Counting helped get her head into the right place, especially after such a personal conversation with Mike. A conversation she didnât want to end. Over the phone she could hear Gordon issue instructions to his secretary. She opened her eyes when his voice grew louder.
âRach, a major job has come in and youâre in a perfect position for us to take full advantage.â
Her body stiffened at the urgency in his voice. With a clean page in front of her she wrote the date on the top right hand corner. What was it with Friday mornings? He never failed to find some way to keep her busy over the weekend.
âGo on.â
âWe have to move on this. The banks have sent me through a list of mortgage defaulters in your region. Itâs simple. They want the properties re-valued, and either the properties auctioned or put to private sale. In my experience these properties will be auctioned.â
Bankruptcies.
Her heart plummeted as she listened to Gordon. âDonât you think the banks are being a little premature? Things are happening up here, and soon money will be flowing back into town.â
âRach, Iâm looking at their figures now and itâs not looking good.â
Her mind rattled back to Sharâs conversation with Bobâs mother yesterday morning naming some families who had pulled their daughters out of ballet classes, and extra after-school tuition. It was all starting to sound very close to home.
âGordon, whatâs the rush? Canât we talk the banks into waiting for another six months or more? Itâll take that long for people to find new work and thereâs talk of turning the mill into a co-op.â
âA co-op? Who in Mindalby has the money to be buying into that? Iâm seeing more red than black on this map.â
She winced at the sudden blast of paper rustling over the phone.
âMindalby, here it is. Thatâs the hardest hit. You canât blame the closure of the mill on everybodyâs financial stress.â
She gripped her phone. âGordon, we both know it takes a while for money to filter through.â
âExactly my point. All this started well before the millâs closure, but now thatâs closed things will only get worse.â
She closed her eyes. It could only get better, it had to get better. They were investing so much money and time into the revamped bakery, it had to work. What would Gordon know about what was happening in Mindalby, he wasnât the one speaking to local business people.
âThereâs nothing I can do up here.â
âThereâs plenty you can do. I want you to speak to both banks in Bourke and any in the satellite towns like Mindalby, and get the process started. Weâre getting a list of names together now and thatâll be emailed to you shortly.â
Stunned, she bit into her bottom lip. Things were rapidly spiralling out of control.
Gordon purred. âI canât believe it. With you there, the timing couldnât be better.â
The man was positively crowing.
